Pneumatic Control Units & Switches – Technical FAQ

Safe control of hydraulic systems begins with choosing the right Pneumatic Control units. Hayneks offers ergonomic and durable Pneumatic Switch solutions designed for truck hydraulics, tipping systems, and PTO activation. Review the questions below for technical details and usage guidelines.
1. What role does a Pneumatic Switch play in a hydraulic system?

Pneumatic switches allow operators in the cabin to manage external hydraulic components using air pressure signals. They act as the primary triggers for PTO activation and managing directional control valves to engage systems mechanically.

2. What is the difference between illuminated and non-illuminated PTO switches?

Illuminated models provide a visual signal indicating that the PTO is active. This serves as a critical safety barrier to prevent accidental operation while the vehicle is in gear or traveling at high speeds.

3. How many ways do tipper raise/lower controls typically have?

Pneumatic controls used in tipping systems are usually 3-position and multi-way. This allows air to be directed to different ports to manage the raise, lower, and stop functions of a telescopic cylinder without error.

4. Does the system's air pressure affect the lifespan of the switch?

Yes. Truck pneumatic systems usually operate between 6 and 10 bar. Hayneks switches are manufactured with high-quality seals compatible with this range. Excessive pressure leads to premature seal wear, while low pressure may prevent the switch from triggering the valves.

5. What hose sizes are used in pneumatic switch installation?

Following international standards, pneumatic hoses with an outer diameter of 6mm or 4mm are typically used. The quick-connect fittings on our switches ensure an easy, leak-proof hose attachment.

6. What are the use cases for single versus panel-type (multi) switches?

Single switches suffice for only PTO or only tipper control. However, for vehicles like vacuum trucks requiring control of pumps, vacuum, and rear gates, Multi-Control Panels provide an organized in-cabin layout.

7. How can you detect an air leak in a pneumatic switch?

If an operator hears a "hissing" sound in the cabin or hears gear grinding when engaging the PTO, an air leak is likely. Leaks drop the triggering pressure, which can cause the hydraulic pump or PTO to engage only partially.

8. Are Hayneks pneumatic switches compatible with all transmission and PTO brands?

Our switches work on universal air signal logic. Therefore, they can seamlessly communicate with pneumatic PTO units from ZF, Mercedes, Volvo, Scania, and all other major transmission brands.

9. How should pneumatic switches be cleaned and maintained?

The exterior can be cleaned with a damp cloth. Internally, ensuring the air in the pneumatic line is dry and clean is the best maintenance. Regularly draining water from air tanks maximizes the life of the internal seals.

10. Why should safety-lock switch models be preferred?

To prevent accidental activation of dangerous equipment or high-torque shafts, Safety-Lock (Safe Mode) models are preferred. These switches do not open the circuit without a deliberate pulling or lifting action by the operator.
