A piston pump is a positive displacement pump that uses the reciprocating motion of pistons to move fluid. They are capable of generating high pressures (often exceeding 400 bar).
Due to their high volumetric efficiency and robust construction, they are the preferred choice for demanding applications like cranes, excavators, and industrial presses where reliability is paramount.
These two types serve different needs:
Both types are available in Hayneks inventory to suit your specific application.
Gear pumps are typically used for lower pressure applications (max 250 bar). Piston pumps, however, can handle pressures up to 400-450 bar and offer superior efficiency (95%+). For heavy loads and precise operations, a piston pump is the superior choice.
To ensure you select the correct pump, consider the following:
Most piston pumps come with a fixed rotation. However, on select Hayneks models, rotation can be reversed by adjusting the back plate. Caution: This requires technical expertise; incorrect adjustment can damage the shaft seal.
For optimal performance, use high-quality hydraulic oils such as ISO VG 46 or ISO VG 68 with anti-wear additives. Keeping the oil clean and filtered is the single most important factor for pump longevity.
Excessive noise is often a sign of cavitation (air entering the system or a clogged suction filter). Overheating typically results from low oil levels, using the wrong viscosity oil, or internal leakage caused by component wear.
With proper lubrication (clean oil) and regular filter maintenance, piston pumps can provide years of reliable service. Preventing cavitation and monitoring oil temperature are key to extending the life of your pump.
